A MAN has been arrested and charged under the Misuse of Drugs Act as part of an operation to tackle the circulation of drugs in prison, police have said.
Officers attended Saughton Prison around 5.35pm on Thursday after receiving intelligence relating to the possession and distribution of drugs behind bars.
A search was carried out of a vehicle within the prison car park and various drugs and other items associated with organised crime were seized.
A 53-year-old man is scheduled to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court today.
A police spokesman said: “Lothian and Borders Police continue to gather intelligence on organised criminals – including those serving time in prison and will act on any information relating to illegal activities they may be involved in. We are committed to dismantling the operations of crime groups across the force area.
“Anyone with information relating to crime in their community should contact police.”
