A 38-year-old man who allegedly stabbed a stranger with a syringe needle outside The Scotsman Hotel on Edinburgh’s North Bridge has been fully committed for trial and remanded in custody.

Alan Aitken made his second appearance on petition at the city’s Sheriff Court today in private before Sheriff Kenneth Maciver, charged with assault to injury.

His appearance follows reports that a 36-year old man was assaulted on Saturday July 18, after telling a beggar, who had asked him for a pound, that he had no coins on him.
