A MAN has died after being hit by a car on the City Bypass.
Police said the 47-year-old, who has not been named, was walking in the roadway when the accident happened on the eastbound carriageway at the Straiton junction at around 7.20pm last night.
It is understood he may have been trying to cross the road when he was hit. The car involved in the accident, a Vauxhall Insignia, stopped and remained at the scene.
The man suffered serious injuries and died while being taken to hospital.
The road was closed for four and a half hours.
Police officers are now urging anyone who can assist with their inquiries to come forward.
Sergeant Brian Jones said: “We are currently trying to establish why the man was on foot and what he was doing on the carriageway and we are keen to hear from motorists who were on the road at the time.
“Similarly, anyone with any further information relevant to our investigation is asked to contact police immediately.”
