A MAN has been charged with a weapons offence after police and bomb disposal teams swooped on an Edinburgh street last night.

Residents living near Jamaica Mews were evacuated while the operation was in progress.

Police confirmed today that a 38-year-old man has been arrested and charged with “possession and manufacture of a prohibited weapon” and is due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court today.

An ongoing inquiry has led to the recovery of a “number of items” at a house in Jamaica Mews, said a spokesman.

For safety reasons, and in conjunction with Explosive Ordnance Disposal there was also a controlled explosion at Fettes late last night, and a second this morning.

But police stressed that “at no time was there any danger to the public”, and a number of residents in the area around Jamaica Mews were evacuated at 1pm, but were allowed back in around midnight.

Officers sealed off the city centre street yesterday afternoon while they carried out a search of a house.
