FORMER Hearts and Hibs footballer Michael Stewart has lost out on his bid to stand for Westminster at the general election in May.

The ex-Scotland player turned TV pundit was one of three candidates in the running to be named the SNP’s candidate for Edinburgh West.

But in a ballot of local party members, Stewart and City Centre councillor Alasdair Rankin both lost out to Business for Scotland managing director Michelle Thomson.

She will now stand for the SNP in the seat currently held by Liberal Democrat Mike Crockart.
