My perfect weekend: David Bishop, Edinburgh Napier University

Have your say

David Bishop, author and creative writing lecturer at Edinburgh Napier University.

1 Who would be your ideal weekend companion and why?

My ideal companion would be my wife, for all the obvious reasons. If she wasn’t available, I’d choose actor Simon Pegg. He’s an unashamed geek and loves iconic British comic 2000AD which I used to edit, so we’d have plenty to talk about.

2 Where would you take them in Edinburgh?

I haven’t seen the pandas yet so we’d take a trip to Edinburgh Zoo. It’s fun trying vintage clothes on in the Grassmarket, before scrambling up Victoria Street, checking out the fresh art and second-hand books on the way. If it’s raining, we’d duck into the Scottish National Gallery.

3 Where would you go for breakfast/lunch/dinner?

Breakfast isn’t essential but a good jolt of caffeine is which means a trip to Wellington Coffee on George Street for a flat white. Staying warm in Edinburgh can be a challenge when the wind blows in, so a bowl of soup for lunch at La Barantine on Bruntsfield Place is perfect. We’d treat ourselves to a macaroon for a sweet morsel after the soup – delicious. Dinner is most enjoyable when shared, so we’d head to my favourite Spanish restaurant, Tapa, hidden away up Shore Place in Leith.

4 What one item would you not be without?

In Edinburgh, I never venture outside without a hat. The city can get through four seasons in one day so a hat is useful for warding off the sun, showers, sleet, snow and whatever the weather might throw at you.

5 How would your perfect weekend finish?

My perfect weekend would end with a good laugh at The Stand Comedy Club on York Place, where one of my former creative writing students, Sian Bevan, cracks wise sometimes. Then home to sleep, perchance to dream of another perfect weekend . . .
