Neighbours today spoke of their shock after a woman plummeted almost 60ft from a top floor window.

The woman, who has not been named, is still in a serious condition in hospital after she was found lying in a garden outside the front of a block of flats in Piershill Square West, off Portobello Road, on Saturday morning.

Neighbours rushed to her aid. Emergency services were called to the scene and the woman was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

It is believed that she smashed through a glass table which was lying in the garden and was found with her head in a hedge at around 8.30am.

Neighbours in the block were visibly shaken and have been visited by police, who said inquires remained in their early stages.

One neighbour said: “It’s horrendous, I don’t know what happened. Police have been going round all the doors to try and find out. I’m so upset about it, really shaken up.”

It is believed that a family had recently moved into the flat, which residents said was set aside as crisis accommodation.

Rumours were swirling around the square, with some saying that the woman was seen dangling from the window in the moments before she plunged to the ground.

An eyewitness, who saw the aftermath of the incident, said the victim’s daughter was in shock as she stood by her injured mother.

“I thought it was fight at first, then I realised it was all women’s voices. Someone was saying ‘I love her’, then shouting ‘mum, mum, mum’.

“I went outside and people were there looking down at something, and I realised it was a body.

“Her head was in a hedge and she must have gone through the coffee table. Her face was red with blood, she was in a mess.

“The neighbours were helping her on the ground, then the ambulance crews got her on a spinal board.

“I thought she must have jumped but someone said that she had been hanging out of the window for a while.”

It is understood that the police are not searching for anybody in connection with the incident.

Another resident said she had been woken by shouting, before hearing a sickening crash.

“I just heard this huge smashing sound,” she said. “I thought someone was smashing car windows at first, but it must have been her falling through the furniture. Then there was a big crowd outside standing around her.

“There’s a few rumours, one that she was pushed and someone said she was hanging from the window. It’s crazy.

“There were a few young girls who were shouting before she fell. It’s very strange.”

A police spokesman said: “At 8.30am on Saturday, October 19, Police officers attended a report of an injured person lying outside a flat in Piershill Square West, Edinburgh.

“The injured party was taken to hospital where they are being treated for their injuries.”
