LOTHIAN’S new Tory MSP has praised First Minister Alex Salmond as “a class act”.
Cameron Buchanan, who will be sworn in as a list MSP next month following the death of David McLetchie, also praised former Presiding Officer George Reid.
And he added: “It’s a pity they’re both SNP.”
Mr Buchanan, 66, said he had met the First Minister on several occasions. “Very impressive, very single-minded – a lot of respect for him. What I would say is he’s a class act.
“I always thought George Reid was a class act.”
The new MSP also said it was too early to say whether Mr Salmond could produce a victory in next year’s independence referendum.
He said: “He’s the type of politician who could spring a surprise at the last minute and we would be wrong-footed.”
Mr Buchanan, a former textiles salesman, speaks four languages and has been Edinburgh’s Honorary Consul for Iceland for the past 20 years.
He joined the Tories in 1998 and describes himself as centre-right. Health, business and cutting red tape would be his priorities as an MSP, he said.
