Thousands of locals descended on Leith Links in August 1972 for the port’s annual gala day.

Highlights included trips in a hot air balloon. That month, women’s lib campaigners protested outside the men-only Merlin pub in Morningside Road, displaying placards and distributing leaflets to customers. Meanwhile, August 1972 also saw city bus drivers demonstrate outside the City Chambers for a pay rise.
