PASSERS-by could hardly believe their eyes when they saw a cheetah sitting on the pavement outside Edinburgh Zoo back in April 1964.

But the big cat had not made a triumphant bid for freedom – it was at the end of a lead held by Gilbert Fisher, the director-secretary of the zoo at the time. Scrap the cheetah was often taken out for a walk by Mr Fisher.

Jazz clarinettist Acker Bilk delighted guests at the Edinburgh Students’ Charities Appeal Rock ‘n’ Beat ball in the Palais de Danse in Fountainbridge in April 1964. The ball attracted a capacity audience. Also that month, an empty lorry crashed through a 15ft section of railings at Portobello promenade. Luckily, no-one was injured.
