The first day of the new 20mph zones was always going to throw up problems.

The 6,000 street signs that have been erected around the city give some idea of the scale of the changes that motorists are trying to get their heads around. It is going to take time for us all to get used to it.

A lot of these problems may melt away in the coming days as we get used to the new rules. Let’s hope so.

However much most people wanted this change or not, it is here and we will have to live with it for the immediate future at least.

What is crucial now is that the problems which are being reported are monitored and where necessary action is taken.

One of the most worrying complaints to surface on the first day is that the new speed limit has slowed down traffic on main roads with the result that speeding drivers have taken to rat-running along side streets. That would defeat the whole purpose of the scheme.

Some further changes may be necessary to manage some of these local problems.

Please let us know how it is affecting you - for good or for bad - and we will continue to highlight your view of how your city is changing.
