'You want to aim high' - Lewis Stevenson speaks on whether Hibs can split the Old Firm

Lewis Stevenson insists Hibs have to be realistic in their targets after victory against Motherwell saw them leapfrog Aberdeen into third and cut the gap on second-placed Celtic to just a single point.

The Parkhead side’s form issues have been well documented in recent weeks and with the Capital club having a favourable run of fixtures between now and Christmas, it would perhaps be understandable if talk at East Mains had turned to keeping the Dons at bay while putting pressure on Neil Lennon’s team.

Not so, according to Hibs' long-serving pragmatic left-back, who revealed the Easter Road side would maintain their approach of splitting the season into smaller segments.

"If Motherwell had beaten us then I think they would have only been a couple of points off us so that gives us a fair gap," Stevenson said after the convincing win at Fir Park.

“There's a massive gulf financially between us and the Old Firm. Obviously you want to aim high but it's best for us to concentrate on the six-game blocks and see where it takes us.

"It might be negative to have a mindset of always aiming for third but it's important to be realistic. If we targeted winning the league every season we'd end up disappointed.

"We need to set targets but we need to be realistic. It's worked well with the blocks so far; I think we've matched every points total we've set so if we keep that going we'll see where it takes us."
