Lynne McCrossan: Hayley Scanlan dazzles

There are women in the world that you look at and think ‘how the hell do they do it?’

Hayley Scanlan is one of them. Last week she excelled in her superwoman status by delivering a brand new spring summer HS collection to rapturous applause.

If you didn’t know her to look at you could easily mistake the striking blonde for one of the models whizzing around pre-show. She has a Sedgwick-esque quality akin to Warhol’s superstar Edie.

There is an energy around her that is contagious. You only have to look at the hordes of Scanlanians – the name I’m dubbing her diehard fans – decked in her designs to understand that.

I’ve never seen such dedication from show-goers before.

Usually the fashion audience appears aloof, almost detached from what they are are watching.

Not Hayley’s crowd. They are as much a part of the show as the show itself. Each one wears differing variations of her work since the launch of the diffusion line over a year ago.

And those Scanlanians were not disappointed. Their head girl delivered a collection fit for Rizzo in Grease. Pretty pinks and polka dots were rocked up with black biker leather and snakeskin.

This mixture of hard and soft is rapidly becoming Scanlan’s signature.
