Talk of the Town: JK proves that mum’s the word

Have your say

SHE may fight tooth and nail to keep her children out of the spotlight, but it hasn’t stopped JK Rowling being voted one of the best celebrity mums in the UK.

The Harry Potter writer came third in a poll commissioned by website pchprizes.co.uk, finishing only behind television personalities – and by far more publicity hungry – Holly Willoughby and Myleene Klass.

There doesn’t appear to be any obvious trend to the poll; the Queen came fourth behind the city author, while Victoria Beckham finished fifth. Secretive JK’s glory just goes to show – mum really is the word.

Verdict from the pants poll: city men love their Y-fronts

CAPITAL residents have a reputation for stuffiness and seriousness which we at Talk of the Town like to debunk whenever we can. But apparently the city’s men are traditionalists right down to their underwear. A survey by Debenhams of “regional pants preferences” shows that our men can’t get enough of Y-fronts – which are listed as Edinburgh’s men’s favourite style.

We’re being shown up by Londoners, who go for Emporio Armani black stretch cotton hipster briefs, and blokes in Cardiff, who go for rugby stripe boxers. So much for not hanging your dirty laundry out in public.

Dating that’s above board

IT’S fair to say that times have changed when it comes to wooing a prospective date.

Online encounters, speed dating and lonely hearts columns have consigned dance hall romances to the past as modern Scots seek out new ways to land a mate.

But as one Twitter user highlighted yesterday, there are loveless souls who go to extreme lengths to make an impression.

Kate Higgins – aka @burdzeyeview – claims to have spotted a man bedecked in a sandwich board in St Andrew Square that proudly proclaimed: “Looking 4 woman who likes gingers. Seriously.”

Brings new meaning to the phrase “faint heart never won fair maiden”.

The Wanted wanted by SuBo

SUBO has herself a new dream. The Blackburn songstress has set her sights on recording a duet with boy band The Wanted.

And it seems the feeling is mutual, as when asked who they would most like to record with, the teen stars replied: “Susan Boyle.”

That could push her closer to realising another dream – assuming, that is, she still hasn’t been kissed.
