The new Doctor Who will keep his Scottish accent when he takes over the role in the Tardis, series executive producer Steven Moffat has announced.

Moffat told an Edinburgh Festival Fringe audience he would be “very surprised” if Glaswegian actor Peter Capaldi did not retain his Scottish accent as the show’s 12th Doctor.

Capaldi, best known for playing foul-mouthed Malcolm Tucker in British comedy series The Thick of It, was announced as the series new lead actor earlier this month.

Oscar-winning director Peter Jackson was also described as “very keen” to film an episode of the sci-fi show, with any one-off special likely to be shot in New Zealand. Moffat said: “He is serious about it. I spoke to him at the premiere of The Hobbit. He just wants a Dalek, that’s all he wants, then he will direct an episode.”

Reports that author JK Rowling had written a Doctor Who short were not confirmed.
