Police have stepped up patrols in Dalkeith after a woman was sexually assaulted at the weekend.

Detectives are trawling CCTV footage and carrying out door-to-door inquiries following the incident on Sunday morning.

The 27-year-old was forced into a wooded area between Lauder Road and Wester Kippielaw Drive after getting off a bus at around 3.45am on Sunday.

She was subjected to a “horrendous” sexual attack, however she was not raped.

Chief Inspector Kenny Simpson of Police Scotland said: “Thankfully, offences of this nature are rare, however this does not lessen the trauma experienced by a victim and family. Police patrols have now been stepped up in Dalkeith and surrounding area to provide a reassuring presence in the community.”

The suspect is described as white and around 20, 5ft 7in with a very slim build. He has short dark hair and was wearing tight fitted jeans and a shiny black hooded top.
