Police reform ‘quango’ fear

Scotland’s police service would become a “quango” if plans go ahead to create a single police force accountable to an unelected board and the Justice Secretary, it has been claimed.

Rory Mair, the chief executive of Cosla, which represents councils, warned the centralisation plan was “fundamentally wrong and fundamentally flawed” while speaking at a conference discussing proposals to reform the country’s eight police forces into a single or regional structure, it was reported today.

Ministers were also accused of failing to give police enough detail about how accountability and governance would work in a single force.
