Officers said they hoped the man pictured in CCTV images would be able to help with the investigation.

He is described as white, in his early 20s, around 6ft tall, of a slim build, with short brown hair.

He was wearing a white shirt, red tie and black suit.

Detective Constable Graham McIlwraith, of Gayfield Police Station, said: “This appears to have been an entirely unprovoked attack leaving the victim requiring treatment for an injury to his face. Given the time at which this incident took place, there were potentially a number of people leaving the various establishments in Hanover Street who may have witnessed the incident.”

Anyone with information should contact Police Scotland on 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
