MOVES to readmit Edinburgh West MP Michelle Thomson to the SNP have been condemned inside and outside the party.

Ms Thomson resigned the party whip a year ago and had her SNP membership automatically suspended over a police investigation into her company’s property deals.

She has denied any wrongdoing and says police have not spoken to her.

Now the SNP group at Westminster is calling on the party to allow her back in.

But a senior SNP source in Edinburgh West said if she was reinstated the party would lose the seat at the next election.

“Whether Michelle Thomson has done anything wrong or not, politically she is toast,” said the source.

“We lost the seat at the
Holyrood elections because of the narrative that the MP was not representing people.

“Whether it’s true or not, the damage is done. To think she can hold onto this seat in 2020 is delusional at best.”

Edinburgh Western Lib Dem MSP Alex Cole Hamilton, said whether to reinstate Ms Thomson was an internal matter for the SNP.

But he said: “From what I get on the doorstep it is clear Michelle’s credibility has been fatally undermined by this episode. Whatever decision the SNP makes about her group status will not remedy that.

“There is a police investigation under way and the SNP group seem to have circumvented that police process. They have every right to make their decision, but people will rightly be asking how they can ignore the very serious questions that remain unanswered.”

Lothian Labour MSP Neil Findlay said: “At the heart of this case are vulnerable people who have lost out because of the alleged actions of people trying to make a quick buck.

“There are still many questions to be answered about this case. But given what we do know, it would be wrong for Michelle Thomson to return as an SNP MP.”
