THE candidates for next month’s Leith Walk ward double by-election have been announced.
The vote on September 10 follows the resignation of Cllr Deidre Brock of the SNP and Green councillor Maggie Chapman.
Ms Brock stood down after being elected as a MP for the Edinburgh North and Leith constituency in May while Ms Chapman stepped down to concentrate on her bid to become an MSP.
Candidates include Marion Donaldson of the Labour Party, Mo Hussain of the Liberal Democrats, Tom Laird of the Liberal Democrats, Alan Melville of UKIP and Scottish Unionist Gordon Murdie.
Also standing will be Susan Rae of the Green Party, Natalie Reid of the Scottish Socialist Party, John Ritchie of the SNP, Independent John Ferguson Scott and Bruce Whitehead of Left Unity.
The election will use the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system in which voters use numbers to rank candidates in order of preference rather than using a single cross.
Returning officer Sue Bruce said: “This is the first time a Scottish council by-election has been held to fill more than one vacancy in a ward using the STV system.
“Voters can vote for as many candidates as they like – this time though, voters must show their choices by numbering the candidates on the paper, with one being their first choice.”
