RED-CARPET galas are to be doubled and prize money boosted in a bid to return the Edinburgh International Film Festival to “greatness”.
The festival will also introduce a new documentary award.
The moves follow the event’s dramatic debacle in 2011 when the number of premieres almost halved and all awards were scrapped.
The 2014 festival will see two extra galas in addition to the opening and closing films. The Best International Film Award will double its prize money to £10,000. The new documentary prize will also be worth £10,000 and other awards will also increase.
Festival chairman Bob Last said: “EIFF is on a journey back to greatness. There was a year zero prior to the involvement of the current team, when organisers threw all their sticks in the air and tried to reinvent the festival. They got it wrong. But we are rebuilding.”
