During Edinburgh’s hectic festival season, it can be difficult to find somewhere with a table for a pre-show meal on a Saturday night.

But ahead of a Fringe show at the Playhouse, Leith Walk was a handy location for dinner, away from the hustle and bustle of the main areas.

Cafe Casablanca proved to be an ideal place to enjoy a relaxed meal, and its bring-your-own-bottle policy – with no corkage – also went down a treat.

The venue’s Moroccan fare is complemented by brightly coloured decor and traditional music.

Friendly staff ushered us to our seats and insisted on putting our drinks in the fridge to keep them cool for us.

The extensive menu offered a raft of courses, but we decided to go straight for the main course tagines with a variety of sides.

While all five of us opted for different varieties, no-one appeared to be disappointed.

I opted for the Tagine Fassi; a deliciously tender dish of chicken cooked with a sweet sauce, spices and dried apricots (£8.50).

Served with a generous helping of couscous, it was a satisfying main course and I was relieved I’d resisted the temptation for a starter.

Another member of the party was particularly complimentary about the Tagine Zagora with lamb, onion and potato (£9.90).

Service was swift and the laid-back atmosphere added to a pleasant dining experience.

All in all, Cafe Casablanca offers a welcome taste of Morocco in Leith, and the BYOB policy helped to keep the bill modest.
