In an age where everyone is always rushed off their feet, looking good can sometimes be a challenge.

But whether you’re squeezing in a manicure or taking time to be pampered from head-to-toe, finding the perfect salon where you can rely on trusted therapists to make you feel transformed is a must.

That’s why the Evening News has made it our mission to find the cream of the crop by launching the Salon of the Year 2014 competition.

We asked you to nominate your favourite hairdressing and, or beauty salon earlier this year and after hundreds of entries we can now reveal the top 40 who will be battling it out for your votes to receive the beauty crown.

Evening News editor Frank O’Donnell said: “We know that our readers feel strongly about the people and services they frequent, whether it’s a pub, sandwich shop, chippy or hairdresser. Now we want News readers to tell us why their salon is the best in the Lothians. Your testimonials will be printed in the paper and your votes will decide the winner. What better way to decide the cream of the crop.”

Our beauty columnist, Sarah Tolan, said the perfect salon was “somewhere that pampers you whilst giving you a home from home experience”.

“In my book, whether it’s waxing or highlighting, taking the time to have an initial consultation about what the client wants or would suit is vital and helps to build up a relationship. I also think it’s important that the therapist is engaged with the customer. This doesn’t necessarily mean chatting ten to the dozen but making sure the customer is made to feel special.”

But as well as having the best treatment, Ms Tolan said the more “obvious” aspects such as cleanliness, decor and good music are also important.

“The pampering shouldn’t just stop at the treatment and the little things can make all the difference with current magazines and a cup of tea.”

Top city hairdresser Charlie Miller has forged a reputation for introducing new concepts and trends and now has five salons throughout the city.

It is led by international creative and artistic directors Jason and India Miller who also agreed making the client feel special was the key to success.

“Every day we have the opportunity to make someone look and feel fantastic – that’s what we do,” joint managing director, Mr Miller, said.

“Hairdressing continually comes in the top three of the City & Guilds survey every year on job satisfaction and part of the reason for that is because of what it feels like to be a hairdresser – you get to make someone feel fantastic.”
