MARGO MacDonald’s plea from beyond the grave to keep bitterness and malice out of the independence debate was commended to MSPs in the Scottish Parliament’s final debate before the referendum.

Green MSP Patrick Harvie invoked the memory of the Independent Lothian MSP, who died in April, as he echoed her appeal for rivals to recognise those in the other camp were opponents, not enemies.

At the celebration of her life in the Assembly Hall, Margo’s husband Jim Sillars voiced her appeal for “the exercise of mutual respect” as “a civilised corrective to uncivilised abuse”.

Mr Harvie said: “Margo was right. Scotland deserves a respectful debate, and both sides should strive to achieve this over the final weeks of this creative and engaging campaign.

“Whatever the result, we must not return to the kind of politics that left so many people unimpressed and disconnected.”
