A teenager has been arrested for allegedly taking a £20,000 ambulance for a joyride.

The vehicle is said to have been driven off by the 17-year-old after a paramedic left it outside a house while responding to a 999 call.

The suspect is believed to have driven the Honda CRV ambulance for 20 minutes before losing control of the vehicle and crashing it into a wall in Whitburn, where it was found.

The alleged joyrider also damaged street lights in the area. The stolen ambulance is reportedly likely to be written off.

Police were called after the paramedic discovered the vehicle had disappeared from outside the incident he was attending to in Fauldhouse.

A police spokesman said: “A 17-year-old was charged with traffic offences. A report has been sent to the fiscal.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said: “The medic finished his shift in another vehicle.”
