NEW Lothian Conservative MSP Cameron Buchanan surprised fellow Holyrood politicians with a bizarre jibe at a French-born Scottish Nationalist MSP.

Mr Buchanan – who went to university in Paris – interrupted a speech by North East SNP MSP Christian Allard during a debate on the census.

He demanded: “How can you call yourself Scottish with that Maurice Chevalier accent?”

Mr Allard appeared taken aback but has not made any formal complaint.

Mr Buchanan became an MSP in September following the death of former Scottish Tory leader David McLetchie, who was a list MSP for
Lothian.

The textile entrepreneur has also been honorary consul for Iceland since taking over the role from broadcaster Magnus Magnusson in 1993.
