ALEX Salmond wants to start building a high-speed rail link from Scotland to the south.

The First Minister said the Scottish Government would “not wait 30 years for high speed rail” to be delivered by Westminster and pledged a feasibility study on work beginning from the north heading south, if Scotland becomes independent.

His announcement, during a visit to Carlisle, followed recent reports that the proposed third phase of high-speed rail from either Leeds or Manchester to Edinburgh and Glasgow would be ditched after a Yes vote.

High-speed rail could cut Edinburgh-London journeys times by over an hour.
