CONTROVERSIAL plans for parking fees at East Lothian beaches have taken a step forward with formal orders due to be published within weeks.
East Lothian Council wishes to charge beach users £2 to leave their car at ten of the county’s 13 coastal car parks.
The £440,000 expected to be generated from the charges – a sharp drop from an original estimate of £1 million – would be invested in coastal regeneration.
A traffic regulation order is being prepared and if approved would see charges brought in by spring next year in time for the summer season. Councillors voted in December to press ahead with the charges despite a public backlash and an Evening News campaign to scrap the plans.
Campaigners against the charges have compiled a 1000-strong petition and have vowed to fight the plans. Work to implement the charges would cost around £700,000.
