The tram service was been suspended along the entire line after one of the fleet broke down at Haymarket.

The tram broke down just before 4pm causing a blockage which forced engineers to close the route while they removed it.

A Transport for Edinburgh spokesman said tram tickets were being accepted on Lothian Buses.

The break-down was caused by a power failure on the individual tram.

The service restarted at around 5.25pm, although delays were expected to continue as the service got back up to speed.

Travellers reported that Airlink bus services to the airport were heavily overcrowded with tram ticket holders.

The broken down tram was being removed to the depot for inspection.
