Car park attendants at St John’s Hospital in Livingston are to be fitted with CCTV cameras after being subjected to physical and verbal abuse from motorists.

They will trial the cameras in a bid to reduce violence and aggression towards them.

The move comes amid growing abuse as they try to free up spaces for patients and clear lanes for emergency services.

During a recent spate of incidents, one attendant was struck by a walking stick and another had a car deliberately driven at him.

Hospital bosses hope the cameras – which are about the size of a name badge – will act as a “silent witness” when gathering evidence against offenders.

An NHS Lothian spokesman said: “We have a zero tolerance approach to violence.”
