ALEX Salmond today announced former Lord Advocate Lord Hardie will chair the public inquiry into Edinburgh’s £776 million trams project.

Speaking at First Minister’s Questions, he said the inquiry would look at why the project cost more than budgeted for and why it was delivered significantly beyond the expected date.

Mr Salmond added: “Lord Hardie will establish the inquiry immediately and we look forward to a swift and thorough inquiry.”
