THE company behind construction of Edinburgh’s tram line has won a prestigious Saltire Society civil engineering award - for its work on upgrading the M80 motorway.

The German firm, which was involved in protracted and bitter wrangles with Edinburgh City Council over the £776 million tram project, was the major contractor for completing the “missing link” on the M80, an 11-mile section of Glasgow-Stirling motorway built for Scottish Government agency Transport Scotland.

In stark contrast to the Capital’s tram scheme, half of the £320 million M80 project was completed six months early.

The judges praised the firm’s “ingenuity and enterprise in overcoming challenges involving complex structures.”
