A FIRE in a block of flats saw two women taken to hospital early today.

The blaze broke out in the stairwell of the flats at Waverley Crescent, Bonnyrigg, at around 1.30am today.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said a total of eight people, aged between 12 and 63 years old, were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene by ambulance crews.

Two women aged 41 and 48-years-old were taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for further treatment.

Fire crews left the scene at around 2am.
