AN Edinburgh-based firm which makes eco-friendly tableware, cutlery, cups and takeaway cartons has won a top Scottish business award.
Vegware, which bills itself as the UK’s first and only manufacturer of completely compostable food packaging, took the “best innovation” title and emerged as overall winner at the inaugural Scottish Federation of Small Businesses Streamline Awards and now goes on to the UK finals in London in April.
The company has grown rapidly from a team of two in 2009 to its current compliment of 25 staff and a projected turnover of £6 million this year. It has operations in America and South Africa and EU-wide distribution. Clients range from NHS trusts to independent cafes.
Founder Joe Frankel said tough new waste regulations due next year were helping to boost sales. “Our compostable disposables help businesses go zero waste,” he said.
