A virus sent in emails claiming to be from West Lothian Council has crippled computers nationwide.

The toxic messages encrypt PC files before demanding a ransom of hundreds of pounds to fix them. The authority’s own email network crashed after those sent to defunct addresses bounced back to its own accounts.

A spokesman said: “They were not sent out by us and we are currently investigating. We would advise anyone who received them to delete them immediately without opening them.”
