A RARE first edition of The Wind in the Willows by Edinburgh-born Kenneth Grahame has sold for £3125 at auction.
The edition, which cost seven shillings and sixpence new – about 38p – went under the hammer yesterday at Bonhams in London.
It is rarer than some other first-edition copies because it still has its dust-jacket.
Grahame, who was born in Castle Street in 1859, was 49 years old when The Wind in the Willows, featuring the much-loved characters Rat, Toad, Mole and Badger, was published in October 1908.
In 2010, a first-edition copy which had been expected to fetch up to £5000 sold at auction for £32,000.
