THIEVES took a woman’s bank card as she was inside a shop alerting staff about an unusual device at an ATM outside the store.
The woman went to the bank machine outside Scotmid on Gracemount Drive in Edinburgh to withdraw cash but her card was held.
She then noticed a silver device placed over the machine and went into the shop to report the incident to staff at about 8.30am on Monday.
However, when she returned outside, the device and her bank card had been removed.
After looking at CCTV, two men were revealed to have taken the items while the woman was in the shop.
The card was then used shortly afterwards at the nearby Tesco store to withdraw £80.
Both men are described as white and in their late 20s. One was slim and had a thin face and pointed chin. The other man is described as having a muscular build, broad shoulders, black hair and sideburns.
Lothian and Borders Police are appealing for any witnesses and urged people to be wary of similar devices.
A spokesman said: “At this time we are advising people to be on their guard when using ATMs, and if there is anything unusual about the machine or there are signs of tampering do not use it and report it to the bank as soon as possible.”
