A WOMAN was rescued by fire crews after a blaze broke out on a first floor flat near the city centre.

Emergency services rushed to the fire at the top of Holyrood Road at around 4pm yesterday, with early reports indicating that a person may be trapped inside.

A 63-year-old woman was later rescued by crews using a ladder to a window. She is reported to have suffered severe burns.

One eyewitness said: “She was rescued from a flat window above the pub Holyrood 9A. I think she was maybe unconscious.”

Holyrood Road was closed from its Cowgate entrance while police, ambulance and fire crews worked to contain the flames.

The woman’s condition is not known.

Fire teams are still investigating the cause of the fire.
