Called Deep Time, the event features an outdoor artwork which brings together animation, lighting and music in a bid to explore 350 million years of Edinburgh’s history.

The tickets were available yesterday at www.eif.co.uk, allowing Edinburgh residents, visitors and tourists to book and experience the largest free event of its kind in the UK.

It takes place on August 7 at 10.30pm.

EIF bosses said there would be further limited releases of free tickets on August 1 and 6.

Director Fergus Linehan said: “We were inspired to create this epic story by Edinburgh resident James Hutton and his pioneering geological work, which impacts so much on how we view the world now.

“As part of that story, we want to celebrate the people who make the city what it is today.”
