A SCHOOLBOY accused of causing the death of Shaun Woodburn told police that he was assaulted during the incident.

The 17-year-old youth also claimed a street disturbance outside a Leith bar on New Year’s Day had been started by racist abuse being shouted at his friend.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was told by police just hours after the incident that a man was in hospital with injuries he could not survive.

Mr Woodburn, 30, died from the injuries suffered in a street disturbance outside Gladstones Bar at around 2am on New Year’s Day. Accused of Mr Woodburn’s murder at the High Court in Dunfermline are Mohammed Zakariyah, 18, of Gilmerton Dykes Grove, Edinburgh, and the 17-year-old youth.

They are also accused of assaults and disorder across Edinburgh the same night and deny all the charges. The trial before Lady Stacey continues.
