JUDGING is to take place to decide the winners of the Evening News Local Hero Awards 2016.

A shortlist of finalists is expected to be announced next week after a panel of judges have met on Monday to scrutinise the entries.

Among them will be Lord Provost Donald Wilson, Tony Kenmuir, from Central Taxis, and Greg Dolan, from Farmer Autocare.

Also among the panel is Edinburgh Evening News deputy editor Euan McGrory.

Mr McGrory said: “There is no shortage of unsung heroes living in and around Edinburgh. In every area of life and in every community, there are people who go the extra mile day after day to help make Edinburgh and the Lothians the fantastic place it is.

“This is the chance to honour them.”

The Local Hero awards search for inspirational community champions, fundraisers and carers who work tirelessly behind the scenes, often without the recognition they deserve.

Many have shown exceptional courage, battled through adversity or gone above and beyond in the line of duty.

Categories include Contribution to Local Sport, sponsored by MKM, and Carer of the Year, sponsered by Renaissance Group.
