The supermarket giants have been contacting customers with expected orders through social media and via text to inform them of the issue.

The firm would not confirm how many orders were affected leaving many customers unsure about their online shop.

A spokesperson for the company said: “We are experiencing a technical issue today that is affecting deliveries to a small number of online customers

“We’re contacting all those affected to apologise for the inconvenience this will cause them and to rearrange deliveries.”

It is understood that the majority of customers will receive their orders as planned and Sainsbury’s have confirmed that it is putting on extra delivery slots in the coming days.

Refunds will also be offered to customers for deliveries that don’t turn up.
