Hibs star Hogg hit by eyesight trauma

Published Date: 06 October 2008
MIXU PAATELAINEN today revealed how defender Chris Hogg ruled himself out of Hibs' Pittodrie win after suffering problems with his eyesight.
Although he had played in all four matches since, Hogg has been struggling since the Easter Road outfit's shock Co-operative Insurance Cup defeat by Morton during which he was the victim of a heavy charge in the back by Eric Paartalu which sent him crashing to the ground.

Ironically, the incident led to referee Iain Brines awarding Morton a free-kick which resulted in their fourth and winning goal. Although Hogg bravely tried to play his way through the problem, he was finally forced to admit defeat for fear of letting himself and his team-mates down.

Paatelainen said: "Chris has been struggling since that challenge when he was concussed. Since then he has had headaches and whenever it's a bright day he's had difficulty with his eyesight.

"He told me he felt it would gradually fade away but it hasn't. Chris said it began to affect his training and in some matches, like the Rangers game which was played on a really bright day, he wasn't able to judge the flight of the ball in the air properly.

"All credit to Chris for being determined to play in every game but he felt he would let the people around him and himself down if he went to Pittodrie so he didn't even travel with the squad."

Hogg has already consulted a specialist and the advice was total rest for ten days which coincides with Hibs having no SPL match this weekend as Scotland take on Norway at Hampden in their latest World Cup qualifying tie.

Paatelainen said: "The doctor said it's very likely the effect from that concussion, that Chris needs to relax and take it easy for ten days or so.

"The important thing is we make sure Chris takes care of himself, that he does what the doctors says and comes back 100 per cent."

Sol Bamba dropped into central defence alongside skipper Rob Jones against Aberdeen and although the star from the Ivory Coast conceded a soft penalty as he collided with the Dons' Lee Miller, Paatelainen was as delighted with his back line as he was the 2-1 win which lifted Hibs to fourth in the SPL table.

He said: "For the first 20 minutes or so of the second half we were under pressure but I felt the defence was solid and organised.

"It was like the Hamilton game when we found ourselves under pressure, the boys knew exactly what to do, they were close to each other, helping each other out and we defended fantastically."

The victory was Hibs' first at Pittodrie for three years and the first time the Edinburgh club had clocked up back-to-back away wins in the League for the same period, another cause for satisfaction as far as Paatelainen was concerned after two goals from Derek Riordan, his second from another highly controversial penalty award by referee Mike McCurry earned the points.

He said: "We realise it's important to win away from home rather than have to rely on our form at Easter Road, you must pick up points elsewhere."

Meanwhile, Moroccan goalkeeper Khalid Sinouh, who has been on trial for the past week at Hibs' training ground, will get his chance to show what he can do in a closed-doors match against Livingston on Thursday.

The match has been advertised by the West Lothian club as being open to fans but Paatelainen was today adamant the game will be played in private.

Two goals from Patrick Deane saw Hibs go six points clear at the top of the Under-19 table as they defeated Rangers, who were reduced to nine men, 2-1 at the weekend.

All of this makes that Brines' decision all the more baffling, though of course Mr Brines loves to be the centre of attention, hopefully noew this will be more in the SFL than the Premier League.

As for Hoggy, get well soon.

True, Brines is a truly honking referee. Although McCurry and his linesman on Saturday were absolute stars!

Good to see the U19's doing well. Hopefully some will be able to step up soon - a couple of decent full backs would be nice.

Get well soon Hoggy.

Brines is the new Freeland.

I think Bamba is stronger at centre back, maybe Hogg can play a holding midfield role?

Great result for the Hibees. Bring on the derby. Hibs 4-0 Hearts. Easy peasy.

Mixu - you can eat all the pies you want after this great win. Hope you didn't leave the bus in a mess.

#6 Party time...beat the SPL's worst team courtesy of a blatantly offside goal & the party hats, ballons etc are on order....sorry my mistake still have them from the last post match party.

As always game could go either way with Hibs justified favourites as at home/carry a significantly better goal threat.... based on that i'll go for a 1-o win for HEARTS.

is anyone else worried that Hibs and Hogg himself were happy for him to start 4 matches when he was having problems with his vision? For his own safety surely he should never have been playing after being concussed and suffering complications.

The time to rest him would have been after the Morton game as a precaution, not leave him vulnerable to serious health problems he could have suffered from playing and possibly getting another head knock. On the footballing side, theres also the added worry for me that we had one of our centre backs playing when he couldnt see properly

brett...you are one to gloat you just did.
my prediction was a tongue in cheek and the cleverer posters will have picked up the fact that ,as always, i will predict the Derby result with my heart and not my head.

Now consider HEARTS record v HIBS over the last 2 years of turmoil/sacking managers.... a blind hibs fan could see that a Hearts win is at least possible.

yoyo.... trying to dissapear but it would be rude of me not to respond. Agree Dons penalty was not a penalty. My point was that poster #6 was spouting about humping Hearts based on beating the SPL's bottom side courtesy of a 100% wrong decision by the ref.

Understand now?

I really wish that the Hibees would refrain from making such daft predictions before a derby. How many times have we done this only for the comments to come back and haunt us.

On paper there really is not much difference between the 2 sides now, with probably Riordan being the main difference. Still, I wont be making any bold predictions on this one!!

Agree #11 and #24. It's a minimum of two weeks off at youth level after concussion is diagnosed. WTF were they thinking?
27

East at Easter,

Edinburgh 06/10/2008 13:32:28
actally thought Bamba was very good vs Dons on Sat. Solid and not wasteful in the pass.
28

Faws,

06/10/2008 13:39:00
Bamba was poor in the 1st half but was unlucky to concede the penalty - much improved 2nd half and looked good there. Fletcher did his usual - Zero and possed around mainly on his ass, needs resting. Shiels is now in his best position coming off the bench. Rankin is not good enough as we struggled again in midfield for 25 mins of the 2nd half.Mixu continues to worry me, leading 2 -1 we still operated nearly on a 4 - 2 - 4 with shiels pushing to far on. Think we were fortunate overall and Mixu's tactical naivety continues to show. Poor Dons helped our cause. I was there and a realist with it.

Radge 21,

Hello Hello its 106 years in a Row!! 06/10/2008 16:11:12
Not wanting to cause any controversy, but yesterday I went up to the Lothian region transport offices at Waverly Bridge to renew my bus pass. Derek Riordon was in the queue right in front of me. I said Hi Derek what brings you in here.
He said that Hibs had given him £53.00 up front to get a bus pass and were prepared to pay the £35.00 a month standing order payments.
Only condition was that he was to keep it all quiet in case any of the other Hibs players found out and went radge. Seemingly Rob Jones has to get two buses to the stadium each day from Colinton and he does not like it.
He said they had even given him money for a day saver ticket just so he could get there.
They asked him to stand against a wall to get his photograph taken.
A few minutes later a lassie came through from the back office with his new pass and said,” Derek we need a photo of you and not your pet Rat”. Derek said that is me ya cheeky bint.
I said stuff them rat boy, I will take you for a pint. But he said he only drinks buckfast while looking at an old photo of Queen Victoria that that sits on his digs wall. In the photo she is presenting the Scottish cup to the hibs captain back in 1902. Yes memories indeed, and he said something about saying to bouncers “do you know who I am” and they always say back to him, yes you are the Muppet who could not make it with a big team and you are not still no getting in. not sure what he was on about then though.

So Radge 21 - has learned to type which makes you think he is probably a Bluenose pretending to be a wannabe Bluenose, but he gave it all away :

"I went to renew my bus pass and Derek Riordan was in the queue right in front of me." so dafty said "what brings you in here?"

Bright as a blackout. Defo Jambo. I'll suggest he's the usual steeroetypical Yam, you know the type - lifetime season ticket holder, one eye in the centre of his forehead and his brother is also his dad. Probably got confused as he usually stands on the other side of the street waiting on the van to turn up for his free cup of tea.
