PORTOBELLO got off the mark in Division 2 B of the national indoor bowls league at the second attempt and they did so in spectacular fashion, crushing Headwell by 43 shots in a 95-52 romp that saw wins on all four of the home rinks.
It was a good performance all round for the rinks skipped by Andrew Caldwell, Darren McKenny, Stuart Betts and Ian Fleming.

"We fired on all four cylinders and that is a great response to our opening defeat and the hope is that we will grow in con
fidence and mount a serious challenge for promotion," said spokesman Andrew Caldwell.

Portobello stamped their authority on all three seven-end phases of the match, making a steady start to capture the first one 30-21 then stepping up the pace to dominate the second, 32-12 and adding a comfortable 33-19 on the third.

Caldwell, 22, carded a 5 on the first end and included another at the 11th en route to skipping Jamie Reid, Danny Gormley and Robert Wood to a 29-15 win for the best result of the match against Headwell's most noted player, Jim Roxburgh.

McKenny was steady throughout to skip Andrew Binnie, Willie Paul and Ewan Murray to a 26-13 win over Craig Watson and the chief highlight was a super 6 at the last.

Betts provided the early inspiration with a flying start to lead 9-0 after four ends and he went on to skip Kerr McKail, Andrew Davie and Davy Brown to a 24-11 win over Stuart Cook.

Fleming had a tougher battle to skip Davy McLeod, Jim Headspeath and John McDermott to a 16-14 win over JJ Watson after moving from 9-9 to 14-10.

• EAST LOTHIAN made it two wins out of two in the B section of the Premier League having returned from Methil with a 17-shot victory (86-69) over newly-promoted East Fife.

Wins on the rinks skipped by Alex Marshall (+9), Derek Oliver (+8) and Scott Kennedy (+1) making the difference especially as the margin of Brian Wyllie's defeat was just a single shot.
