There was joy at last for Scottish 800 metres champion Guy Learmonth (Lasswade) when he beat the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games qualifying standard (1:47.50) in a race in Antwerp, Belgium on Saturday night.
Learmonth clocked 1:47.31 to finish a close second to the Swede Johan Rogestedt (1:47.25) to become the first Scot to better the men’s 800 metres Games standard so far.
“Naturally I’m delighted as it’s been a long time coming but now I want to get both times under my belt this season,” said the Loughborough University student who intends to race again in Amsterdam next weekend.
Scottish long jump champion Sarah Warnock (Edinburgh AC) strengthened her claims for inclusion in the Scottish Commonwealth Games team by winning the English Inter-Counties title in Bedford on Saturday though a following wind of 2.6 metres per second, just over the legal 2mps limit, ruled out another Glasgow 2014 qualifying attempt.
Warnock reached a new personal best of 6.29m, beating clubmate Lisa Ferguson (5.99m) into second place.
Training partner Allan Hamilton (EAC) was unable to make it a double for coach John Scott yesterday, finishing a slightly disappointing third in the men’s long jump with 7.19m.
Gemma Nicol (Dunfermline) withdrew from the women’s 400m final with a sore hamstring after clocking 53.47 seconds in her heat. Kris Robertson (West) was third in the men’s 400m in 47.37 with Lasswade’s Greg Louden fourth for the East in 48.25 after clocking 47.63sec in his heat.
