Guy Learmonth’s Stateside swing started in promising fashion yesterday as the Olympic hopeful opened his summer season with third place at the Payton Jordan Invitational in California

Lasswade’s European indoor finalist crossed the line in 1 minute and 47.08 seconds to retain his spot at the top of the British rankings in 2016.

Edinburgh AC’s European junior champion Josh Kerr, running for New Mexico University, earned another qualifying standard for this summer’s world junior championships in Bydgoszcz in coming fourth in the 1500m with fellow Scot Neil Gourley eighth.

Laura Whittle and Eilish McColgan radically reduced their personal bests in the women’s 5000m to earn the qualifying standard for Rio 2016. Perthshire prospect Andy Butchart did likewise in coming second in the men’s 5000m in 13:18.96, the third-quickest time ever by a Scot.
