City of Edinburgh senior teams Edinburgh Kings and Kool Kats travel to Paisley’s Lagoon Centre tonight seeking a double win in the finals of the Scottish basketball league Play-Offs, the women tipping off against St Mirren at 5pm and the men facing Falkirk Fury at 7.15pm.
It promises to be a doubly emotional occasion for the popular Latvian Edgars Rekis who will be playing his last game for Kings after four years in Scotland.
Rekis and his wife Alena are returning home and he could well bow out on a high note by clinching the Most Valuable Player Award for the season, especially if he repeats his 41-point stellar performance of their semi-final win over Glasgow University at Portobello last Saturday.
One of his main rivals for the national award will be clubmate Lee Reilly whose renewed rivalry with another candidate Falkirk’s Jonny Bunyan could hold the key to tonight’s outcome.
Kings are the Scottish Cup-holders, beating Fury 90-60 in the semi-final while Fury took the league title, beating Kings 95-72 and 73-60 so whoever wins tonight will earn the bragging rights for the season.
Kats have beaten Saints four times this season three times in the league and once in the Scottish Cup which they went on to win. But Saints have noticeably improved and deservedly beat Polonia Phoenix in the semi-final at the Crags centre.
With the help of a home crowd they will be tough to beat.
