Two Capital players, Malcolm Winning of Boroughmuir Blaze and James Gillespie’s High and Gregor Gray of Edinburgh Kings and North Berwick High, have been celebrating being picked for Team GB and the 2013 Olympic Youth Festival in Sydney from January 17 to 20.
Both are Scotland internationalists and will join two English players in a GB quartet to contest a 3x3 tournament against Australia, China, Indonesia, Japan, New Zealand and Oceania.
If Glasgow succeed in their bid to host the 2018 Youth Olympics this form of basketball, which was a big success in Singapore last time, will be included in the list of disciplines.
“Initially I was surprised and shocked but now I’m extremely excited to compete and learn from this opportunity as a player – I expect the level of competition will be high,” said Winning, pictured. Gray, also 16 and a member of Scotland’s junior (under-18) team last season, added: “3x3 is a very different game so a lot more learning to do but it’s going to be an amazing experience and a fantastic start to 2013.”
