City of Edinburgh fought back to defeat Edinburgh Lions 53-49 to retain basketball’s Lothian Cup at Portobello High School on Saturday, while Comets beat Midlothian Saints 49-42 to take the women’s cup.
After a very slow start, City had to come back from 15 points down in the first quarter against the Lions who still led their local rivals by seven at half-time.
A 10-0 run in the third quarter put coach Simon Flockhart’s team in control.
“The guys really stepped it up in the second half with some solid defence and good patience in offence,” declared Flockhart afterwards.
“It was a great team performance and a great way to finish the season after the disappointment of only finishing runners-up (to Boroughmuir Blaze) in the Lothian League first division.”
Meanwhile, Edinburgh University women’s team will be back playing in the British Universities Northern Premier Division next season.
Nottingham University conceded their play-off game against Edinburgh which was due to have been played at the Pleasance on Saturday.
Edinburgh had already beaten Bradford away while the West Yorkshire team had beaten Nottingham in the three-team play-off.
