Edinburgh defeated Glasgow 64-59 to clinch the Scottish Universities men’s basketball title after an enthralling match at the Pleasance last night.
The issue was in doubt until eight seconds to go when Edinburgh guard Cyril Wealer sank two free throws to make certain the hosts would keep their season’s unbeaten record.
Ahead by as much as nine in the first half and 22-15 in front after the first quarter, Edinburgh were pegged back to a slim 31-29 half-time lead.
There was a similar pattern in the second half as Glasgow, led by the superb Canadian Al Alilovic, who scored 29 points, put on a full court press and actually took a 59-57 lead with two minutes left.
But, despite having four players on four fouls each, Edinburgh weathered the storm and scored six from ten free throws in the final minutes to see off their visitors.
Estonian Gert Marisalu led the home scoring with 20 points, Wealer added 14 and Jac St John 12, while Alilovic had 29 for Glasgow.
Edinburgh face Derby in the semi-final of the British Universities Trophy at home next Wednesday and still have to come the final of the Scottish Chairman’s Cup, in which they will play the winners of Saturday’s semi-final between West Lothian Wolves and Portlethen Panthers.
